Lesson 4: Area and Perimeter

When you measure the distance around the outside of a shape, you are finding the perimeter.

Examples:

When you measure the amount of space inside the shape (the blue area in the shapes above) you are finding the area of that shape.

The formula for finding the area of a rectangle is:

Area = base x height

The formula for finding the area of a triangle is:
Area = 1/2 x (base x height)

Try it!

Go to this site and practice finding area and perimeter.

First click on perimeter, and follow the direction on the screen. Try all 3 levels. Once you complete the perimeter activities, go back to the menu and click on area and try all 3 levels.
